Springfield eyes global growth with new IT investment

Please Credit Picture:Keith Taylor A PRECISION engineering firm is celebrating its 10th anniversary after doubling its office and manufacturing space, growing its team and investing in a new website ready for global growth.

Springfield (NE) Limited, which counts Nissan and Dräger Safety as two of its clients, only expanded into new premises on the Chilton Industrial Estate two years ago after investing in high speed Wi-Fi technology.

Springfield designs and manufactures bespoke machinery, fully automated special purpose machines incorporating pneumatics, hydraulics and robotics with full PLC control systems and jigs & fixtures for a mixture of industries, including the automotive and heavy goods markets.

The new website and earlier Wi-Fi solution was provided by Clive Owen Technology Services, the IT arm of Clive Owen LLP in Darlington. The firm installed a building-to-building Wi-Fi link to extend Springfield’s computer network two years ago. The Wi-Fi link enabled the firm to locate its CAD design team in the then new offices and extend its telephone system over the Wi-Fi link.

The latest expansion into the new unit follows another successful year for the engineering firm, which was started in 2005 by husband and wife team, Colin and Marion Milsom. It now employs 20 staff – an increase of 25 per cent since 2013 – and has a turnover in excess of £1m.

“We wanted the website to showcase what we can do and to give us a more global presence,” said Marion.

“Clive Owen are much more than our accountants. They’ve supported us as we’ve grown with advice and IT support and they’ve done a fantastic job with the website.

“We’re well established now and we deserve our place in the market. We love what we do. We come up with the designs in house and then from the concept we follow it through to the fully automated machines which we install. We’re expanding into more production work and we’re currently looking for new staff to join our design team.

Clive Owen Technology Services was launched three years ago to reflect the growing number of clients who need innovative IT solutions to improve efficiency and help them grow their businesses.

Lee Huck, Clive Owen Technology Services director, said: “Springfield is a great example of the skills, precision and talent North East manufacturing firms can offer companies such as Nissan.

“With the right IT infrastructure in place, Springfield will no doubt go from strength to strength. Their new website will act as a showcase to the world for the fantastic work that they’re doing in County Durham.”

“Lindsay personifies creativity. No matter what message you're trying to get across, she comes up with a story that's novel and that works. Lindsay is also generous with her time and ideas, and is genuinely a lovely person to work with. She has helped me with story development, writing press releases and managing press release distribution - and her success rate with having articles published speaks for itself. Highly recommended"
