Down-to-earth application for Kevin’s highly-honed helicopter skills

When Kevin Bennett was a naval helicopter engineer serving in the first Gulf War and in Croatia, lives depended on his skills.

Now Kevin is a civilian, he is confident those highly-honed engineering talents can help him build a successful business helping local householders – and he has drafted in a six-foot screwdriver to help him…

Kevin, from Street in Somerset, is one of the latest franchisees of 0800 Repair, which also uses its own employees and a network of contractors to carry out repairs on household goods such as fridges, cookers and washing machines across the UK.

Kevin will soon be a well-known sight in the Wells and Bath area driving his company vehicle, an eye-catching yellow and black van with the giant screwdriver firmly fixed to the roof.

He said: “I really wanted to use my engineering skills to best effect in civilian life, and I spotted 0800 Repair franchising in Pathfinder magazine, which helps people who are coming to the end of their careers in the services.

“The 0800 Repair advert caught my attention because it’s such a strong name and brand – I loved the six-foot screwdriver on the van, and I was very impressed by how professional the 0800 repair website is.”

Kevin, spent 22 years in the Navy as a helicopter engineer based at RNAS Yeovilton, but his work took him all over the world.  He is now firmly settled in Street in Somerset with wife Sandy and children Tom and Katie, and he has undergone intensive training in appliance repairs in preparation for his new career.

“I’m very ambitious,” he said. “I’m determined to make a success of being self-employed, and I plan to grow the business and recruit another engineer once it’s well-established.

“I’m really looking forward to the flexibility of running my own business. I think I’m joining the company at an exciting time, because it’s proving extremely popular with the public and growing all the time.”

Kevin won’t be piling absolutely ALL of his energy into work, though – he’s keen on keeping fit, and plans to take part in a run soon to raise money for the Somerset Air Ambulance.

“I think it’s important to do something to help the community where you work, and the Air Ambulance does a superb job,” he said.

0800 Repair Managing Paul Feek, 0800 Repair MD said it was great to have Kevin on board.

“There’s a real buzz in the company at the moment as we establish more and more franchises across the UK,” he said. “Our aim is to have up to 150 franchises up and running in three years’ time as we become a household name, and Kevin and his highly-skilled fellow franchisees and engineers have a big part to play in our success.”
