Bradford firm rolls out red carpet for Oscar nominated film

A FAMILY-run flooring business has had the royal seal of approval after supplying carpet for the Oscar-tipped blockbuster, The King’s Speech.

Mill Carpets, which has shops in Black Dyke Mills, in Queensbury and Bradford Road, Bingley, supplied the red wool carpet for the coronation scenes which feature in the film, nominated for 12 Oscars.

Cousins Andy Jennings and Adrian Benson were approached by production company, Speaking Film Productions, when they were looking for props and flooring for The King’s Speech, which was partly shot at Odsal Stadium, in Bradford.

A fitting team from Mill Carpets travelled down to Ely Cathedral, in Cambridge, in December 2009 to fit the 600 metres of red carpet as part of its transformation into the interior of Westminster Abbey.

The film, which follows the life of King George VI, his difficulty with public speaking and how he overcame it with the help of his speech therapist, Lionel Logue, has been taking a million pounds a day at the UK box office and has been nominated for 12 Oscars, including Best Film and Best Actor for its star, Colin Firth.

Mr Benson, who travelled down to Ely Cathedral with the fitting team, said:

“We’ve fitted for the catering industry, for schools and hundreds of homes but we’ve never fitted carpet for Hollywood royalty before.

“Everyone on the production team was really professional. There were strict deadlines to meet and we worked with them to turn things around quickly. It meant working in Ely Cathedral throughout the night and we heard a few funny noises – things going bump in the night – as we fitted the carpet.

“Overall we had a ball with the production team who were great fun to work with. It’s been fantastic seeing our carpet up on the big screen with stars like Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush walking across it. It’s also great to get a mention in the credits at the end.”

Mill Carpets sells flooring to the domestic and commercial markets across the UK. Recent work includes fitting specialist industrial anti-slip flooring both at Lumley Castle, near Durham, in the North East, and the Airbus Wing Factory in Broughton, Cheshire.

“Stride over-performed on all accounts - regional, national and international. We cannot praise the team enough."

“Lindsay personifies creativity. No matter what message you're trying to get across, she comes up with a story that's novel and that works. Lindsay is also generous with her time and ideas, and is genuinely a lovely person to work with. She has helped me with story development, writing press releases and managing press release distribution - and her success rate with having articles published speaks for itself. Highly recommended"
